Costa Rica Packing Guide: Beach & Jungle Essentials

A Costa Rica trip that combines beach time and forest walks calls for a bag packed around your actual plans. Start with your destinations, activities, trip length, and access to laundry. Check the forecast for each stop and ask your accommodation or tour operator what they provide before adding extra gear.

Choose clothing you can wear more than once

Pack comfortable, breathable clothing that mixes and matches, along with enough clean essentials for your itinerary. Include swimwear for planned beach or pool time and a change of clothing for after wet activities. Bring layers suited to your destinations rather than assuming every stop will feel the same.

Prepare for rain and damp belongings

Include suitable rain protection and a way to separate damp clothing from dry items. Keep important documents and electronics protected from moisture. Check the care instructions for your gear and allow time for items to dry when possible.

Match footwear to your outings

Bring comfortable footwear suited to the routes and activities you've booked. Ask guides about closed-toe footwear, grip, and any required equipment before departure. Beach sandals are not a substitute for footwear appropriate to a forest trail, and no outfit makes you “jungle-proof.”

Pack sun and insect protection thoughtfully

Bring a hat, sunglasses, suitable clothing, and sun protection. Include insect repellent appropriate to your needs and use products according to their labels. Check current destination-specific travel-health guidance and discuss individual questions with a qualified healthcare professional before your trip.

Bring a towel only if you need one

Ask whether your accommodation or activity provider supplies towels and whether they can be taken to the beach. If you need your own, choose one that fits your activities and luggage space, and check its care instructions before traveling.

Plan water and snacks around each day

Bring a reusable water bottle and confirm a suitable drinking-water refill option at each stop. Ask your guide about the amount of water and food needed for an outing. Follow posted food rules, keep snacks secured, and never feed wildlife.

Keep travel essentials accessible

Organize your travel documents, booking details, personal medications, and emergency contacts so you can reach them when needed. Check current transport and entry requirements through the relevant official sources, along with your carrier's baggage rules. Keep copies of important information available in a form you can access without a connection.

Leave room for memories, not collected wildlife

A camera, a notebook, or a few sketches can help you remember the trip. Follow local guidance, observe wildlife from a respectful distance, and leave shells, plants, and other natural objects where they belong. Keep valuables secure and ask before photographing people.

You don't need a different outfit or gadget for every stop. Pack for the activities you've chosen, confirm what is already provided, and leave a little room to adapt as the journey unfolds.
